A few days ago, I decided that I need some sunglasses.
You know how it is... Autumn is approaching, and the sun has shifted just enough that it shines directly in my eyes when I drive to work. Either I’m too short or the car’s sun visor is too short, but I can’t seem to escape the bright light. Navigation has also become difficult because I need to steer the car with one hand and block the sunlight with the other. It’s a lot like trying to open a door when your arms are full.
Today was different. The sky was cloudy gray, and I thought to myself, “Yay, no sun in my eyes!” But alas, another problem arose.
Because of the gray sky, I decided to turn on the car lights. Even though the lights were on, I noticed that the dashboard seemed dim. When I asked why John told me that he preferred them this way. He said, “I only use dashboard lights at night.” He gave a reasonable answer, but at that moment, I couldn’t see the speedometer. I needed a bright dashboard.
Then it happened... God used bright sunlight, along with a dimmed dashboard to remind me about the importance of His light.
Think about it... in the beginning of Genesis, God’s first “Let there be...” was all about light, and He said it was good. God separated light from darkness and the first day set time into motion. Day turns into night and night turns into day, repeatedly, as we navigate through life in this world.
The sun still shines and the moon glows, but the world’s view of God’s light has been darkened by the consequence of sin. Without God’s help, we stumble around in the dark with no sense of direction. God’s light reveals our sin and helps us find the only way out—Jesus Christ.
The 8th chapter of John begins with the account of the adulterous woman. Under questionable circumstances, the Pharisees brought her to the town square to test Jesus. As the crowd readied themselves for a self-righteous stoning, Jesus shed his light on the situation. He confronted the crowd with truth... the woman wasn’t the only sinner in town. Jesus chased the accusers away with their own sin and then He led the woman out of darkness.
In John 8:12, Jesus said… “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”
As Christians our testimony is powerful. At some point in our life, Jesus revealed himself to us and we couldn’t resist His light. We chose to follow Him and although we still live in this world, we look forward to eternal life in His light...
Revelation 21:22-27: And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.
Oh, glorious day… God promises that we have a bright future with him, and he keeps his promises!
Remember this, you are loved, and you are always in my prayers.
In Christ, Cheryl
