THE ROLE OF A SERVANT

    Acts 6:1-7

Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”

And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them.

Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.

We begin the month of November with the Ordination of two new Deacons at the 2nd service on October 31st. The current deacons led the church through the process detailed in the church By-Laws and presented two candidates at a Special Called Business Meeting held on the 10th of October.  Billy Crawford and Gene Engel were both unanimously voted in as Deacons.

The above Scripture is generally considered to be the calling of the first deacons.  Their role was to serve the church, indeed, the word “deacon” comes from the Greek word “to serve.”  I’ll be praying for both Billy and Gene as well as the current deacons as they fill their calling in the church.

We also have a role, church:

    1 Thessalonians 5:12-13

And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.

    Hebrews 13:17

Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.

Let’s together pray for our deacons and their families as they serve you and your family!  Let them serve with joy…that helps us all!!!

    God bless, Pastor Rob
